What is a grooved piece?
A grooved part is an element that has grooves on its surface. Splines are furrows that are positioned parallel to the part, most often in the direction of the length. It is the spline machine at the end of the tower that makes the mechanical spline (s).
Used in many industrial sectors, grooved pins ensure reliability and solidity to assemblies.
Grooved parts have different functions:
- Solidarization: immobilizing one element in relation to another thanks to the mechanical splines and the pressure they exert in the housing.
- Positioning: the grooved pin is used to position mechanical elements at a lower cost because grinding and boring operations are not necessary.
- Security: the grooved part is used as a safety part in an assembly, they prevent the parts from detaching from an assembly.
What is a grooved pin?
A grooved pin is a cylindrical pin having grooves on its surface.
On a grooved pin, there may be 1, 2, 3, or 6 splines.
It is more common to find a splined pin with 3 splines at 120° in order to evenly distribute the forces in the receiving component. It is also the easiest process to set up on a grooving machine.
The splines close when the pin is inserted into its housing, this creates pressure between the splined pin and the receiving piece. It is this pressure that maintains a tight fit between the 2 pieces. This can be called “elastic limit tightening” because the deformation of the spline remains in the range of elastic deformation of the material. This adjustment is more efficient than an H7/p6 adjustment.
It can easily be compared to fretting.
LGC designs and manufactures custom grooved pins but there are also standards that allow them to be listed according to standards: iso 8739, iso 8740, iso 8741, iso 8742, iso 8742, iso 8743, iso 8743, iso 8743, iso 8743, iso 8743, iso 8743, iso 8743, iso 8743, iso 8743, iso 8743, iso 8743, iso 8743, iso 8743, iso 8743, iso 8743, iso 8743, iso 8743, iso

How is an LGC grooved pin made?
The LGC method for manufacturing a grooved pin consists in cutting a bar or wire from the desired material to the desired dimensions.
Once the bar or wire is cut, we submit the pins to one of our 30 splitting machines that have been custom designed to optimize the quality of our pins.
The machine is responsible for making splines on the pins with precision using two types of tools called “nails” and “pebbles”.
What are the different types of grooved pins?
There are a multitude of grooved pins that each have their own particularities:
- The splined pin iso 8739, din 1470: longitudinal splines over the entire length, not through.
- The splined pin iso 8740, din 1473: progressive splines over half the length, not through.
- The splined pin iso 8741, din 1474: progressive splines reversed over half the length, not through.
- The splined pin iso 8742, din 1475: longitudinal splines over the entire length, opening out.
- The splined pin iso 8743, din 1476: longitudinal splines over the entire length, emerging with a tapered tip
- The iso 8744, din1471 grooved pin: longitudinal splines over the entire length, through out, equipped with a conical tip.
- The splined pin iso 8745, din 1472: longitudinal splines over the entire length, opening with a flat tip.
PS: Through out means that the mechanical spline extends beyond the pin.
It is the need that defines the type of pin to be used. The particularity of these pins defines their characteristic as well as their specificity, but overall, grooved pins have all the same advantages.
Here are the advantages of a grooved pin in general:
- Solidarization: the splines of a grooved pin allow a solid and simple assembly since grinding and boring operations are not necessary.
- Vibration absorption: the splined pin has a high resistance to vibrations, unlike a simple, split or elastic pin which would tend to travel (leave its housing).
- Positioning: the grooved pin is used to position mechanical components at a lower cost, as precision operations are not required.
- Securing the part: the grooved pin is used as a safety element in an assembly, they prevent parts from coming loose from an assembly.
